Police: Boone man taken into custody after 11-hour standoff

BOONE, N.C. —

A Boone man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after an 11-hour standoff, the Boone Police Department said.

Officers said they were called to a home on Keystone Drive on Tuesday night because of a domestic assault.

The victim, who suffered minor injuries, and another woman were able to leave the home and meet with officers, police said.

The suspect, 56-year-old John Roberts, refused to leave the house and allegedly had several weapons, according to officers.

The police department’s Special Operations Team came to the scene, and an 11-hour standoff ensued. Police said around 6 a.m., Roberts left the house and was taken into custody.

He was taken to Watauga Medical Center for evaluation, officers said.

Police said they obtained warrants charging Roberts with assault on a female and assault by pointing a gun.
