A Charlotte cab driver was hospitalized after being stabbed and robbed of his taxi in the SouthPark area on Friday, police said.
The incident happened near the intersection of Park and Fairview roads. Police said the suspect, 41-year-old Brian Chandler, attacked the cab driver, jumped in the car and took off. He then crashed the stolen cab at the corner of Park and Selwyn roads, according to police.
The front end of the cab was smashed in, and the crash damaged the power pole.
Police said Chandler jumped and ran after the crash. He made it about a quarter of a mile before officers caught him behind a nearby apartment complex, police said.
Investigators said they were able to track Chandler because he was wearing an electronic monitor that he had cut off moments before police arrested him.
Police took Chandler to the hospital after the accident. He had been arrested and released from jail less than two weeks ago on accusations of violating a domestic violence protection order, and police said that’s why he was wearing the monitor.
The cab driver, identified as Gary Hinson, is in the hospital in stable condition.
