DREXEL, N.C. —

Police made a drug bust at a house in Drexel that’s right across the street from an elementary school.

Deputies said they seized 6 pounds of high-grade marijuana from the home on Thursday night. Narcotics officers said the drugs were sealed in plastic in attempt to conceal them.

“I was within two feet of it (and) couldn't smell it at all,” said Sgt. Rick Hasson with the Burke County Narcotics Task Force.

Several guns and nearly $15,000 in cash were also seized, officials said.

Two men are facing felony charges in connection with the drug bust, including manufacturing and selling the marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.

News of the incident concerned parents.

“It's ridiculous,” mother Katrina Poovey said. “They shouldn't have drugs around kids, period.   Especially that close to a school.”

“Think about other people,” another woman said. “Think about your surroundings. Think about the children around the school.”

Deputies said the men were selling drugs out of the home, where a 4-year-old and a 9-year-old also lived.

Deputies said they went to the home after receiving complaints about possible drug activity.

“Anytime there's any kind of activity like that around a school, we make extra efforts to get that out of that community,” said Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant.

The children who were living in the house are now with family members.
