CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they expect to be ready for any problems at Speed Street this weekend.
"Substantially, what you saw last year is going to be what you see this year, with some refinements," said Deputy Chief Harold Medlock on Wednesday.
Speed Street opens on Thursday and runs through the weekend in uptown Charlotte.
Last year, trouble spiraled out of control when crowds of teenagers crashed the party and there was a fatal shooting several blocks from the Speed Street perimeter.
Police said that fatal shooting was not related to the event. But over the past week and a half, police have monitored tweets suggesting that gang members may be targeting Speed Street this year.
"Are we going to be paying attention to that? Absolutely! And we will be monitoring those things now, yes sir," Medlock said.
Organizers of Speed Street say only five arrests were made in the actual Speed Street area last year.
They say if the weather cooperates, they could have more than 100,000 visitors to the three-day street party.
