HICKORY, N.C. —

Police are investigating a bank robbery in downtown Hickory.

Some of the customers at the Wells Fargo on 1st Avenue NW said they had no idea about the robbery until the man took off.

Officers said the man they are looking for told the teller he had a gun and to hand over money. Police said he weighs approximately 250 pounds and appeared to be wearing a belt or strap around his waist to lift heavy objects.

Investigators said they were surprised the bank was targeted because there are so many people who go in and out of the building. There are several other businesses on the upper floors.

Eyewitness News talked with one woman who was inside when it happened. She asked not to be identified.

“I was scared,” she said. “I was scared. I didn't know what was going on until one of the tellers told another teller something and that's when I realized something was going on."

Police are looking at surveillance video from outside the bank to try to determine how the robber got away. Anyone with information should call police.
