A man wanted for murder in the shooting death of his own father was arrested Saturday.
Eyewitness News was in magistrate court as Jiten Patel, 28, entered the court. He was visibly upset and a cast covered his left arm.
Police said Patel shot and killed his 62-year old father Ashwin Kumar Vaghjbhai Patel. They said family members couldn't get in contact with Ashwin Patel on Friday, so they called police. Police later found him shot to death in the family home at 303 Gaston Ave. in Mount Holly.
"Very, very good neighbors. They were like family," said Paul Anderson.
Anderson lives next door. He told Eyewitness News that Jiten Patel lived in the house with his parents. He said Patel's mom was out of town Friday and called him concerned.
Police said after the shooting Jiten Patel took off in his father's car, but police spotted him driving the car near Ozark Avenue in Gastonia and arrested him.
"One of those tragic events that's going to affect that family forever," said Mount Holly Police Chief David James.
Eyewitness News was told the family owns two businesses in Gaston County, including a BP Gas Station.
Eyewitness News also looked back at Jiten Patel's criminal history and found he was convicted on a larceny charge in 2005.
