Police: Man killed after being struck by train in Belmont

BELMONT, N.C. —

A man was hit and killed by a train Saturday morning, according to police.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. in Belmont, N.C. The Gaston County Sheriff said a man was sitting on the tracks near North Main Street when an Amtrak train hit him. He died at the scene.

The Belmont Police Department is continuing the investigation. Police have not said if the man was sitting on the tracks on purpose.

Amtrak train 19 was southbound to New Orleans. The train had 163 passengers, who were uninjured in the incident. The train was delayed two hours.
