GASTON COUNTY, N.C. —
Employees were stunned after discovering handcuffs and a leash inside a local hotel room where a girl with mental disabilities was handcuffed and left alone. The teen's mother faced a judge and admitted to it all. Tiffany Davis said she had a younger child and made arrangements for someone to watch the child. Prosecutors said Davis left her home in Maryland with a plan to handcuff her daughter with mental disabilities to a hotel bed. Davis told the judge she has never been in trouble before. "Indefinitely did something stupid that (I) have never done before," she said. Police said she admitted going to a country club wedding in Gastonia on Saturday, while leaving her 19-year-old daughter cuffed at the ankle to a bed at the Courtyard Marriott. The daughter has a mental disability and has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old child. Somehow she got free and was discovered in the lobby by workers who called 911.
The manager was stunned when he opened the door to the room. "I took her back in the room and oh my God there is a leash and handcuff on the floor," said the caller in the 911 call. He said the girl could not communicate with him. "I'm a parent so there is absolutely no way I can let that go on," said the caller in the 911 call. Police said when they found Davis at the wedding she told them, "I know why you are here." "It would be just like leaving a 3-year-old child by themselves somewhere," said Sgt. Jimmy Arndt with the Gastonia Police Department. The child is in the care of social workers. Davis asked the judge to lower her bond so that she could get out for her kids' sake. "I want to work and take care of my kids," she said. The judge disagreed and doubled her bond. The hotel manager said he could not talk on camera, but said, "Marriott takes great value in the safety of our guests and our patrons."
