CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Investigators told Channel 9 an overnight copper theft led to a natural gas leak in south Charlotte.

First responders were called out to the Arlington Suites on South Tryon Street just before 3 a.m.

Investigators said the thief only got about $20 worth of copper tubing, but the assailant cut the gas line during the crime.

Guests had to evacuate the hotel, but no one was hurt.

They let guests back in before 4 a.m.

Police have not released a description of the thief.
