CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The heavy rain that’s been steady in Charlotte all day is expected to turn to snow on Thursday evening.
Road crews are loading up about 50 trucks and said they will start staging around 6 p.m.
DOT workers spent Thursday readying their trucks and attaching plows.
They will send crews to locations all over Mecklenburg County to be ready to target bridges and overpasses if snow starts to stick to the pavement.
Officials said they will be using salt, not brine, which they have not put down yet because the rain would have just washed it away.
Charlotte DOT officials also said they will be salting hospital entrances and emergency spots.
Officials said it's anyone's guess how bad the effects will be, so they are ready for everything.
“We will be looking at it throughout the night and concentrating our efforts where they're needed, so we will be looking,” said Jeff Littlefield with NCDOT Mecklenburg County.
Some traffic issues reported throughout day
There have been traffic problems all day, from the morning commute to the afternoon commute.
It was bumper to bumper, especially in places like south Charlotte, where Randolph Road was closed. Power lines were down, and one after another, drivers turned around.
Many drifted to Monroe Road, where it didn't become obvious what was wrong until Eyewitness News saw muddy water bubbling up from the right lane, forcing all traffic to the left.
MEDIC is adding three or four crews Thursday night.
"We continue to post our trucks as best we can around the county to make sure we have the appropriate resources where they need to be to get to the calls as quickly as possible,” supervisor Don Shue said.
They have canisters under the ambulances that can wrap chains around their tires if need be, but they hope there won't be enough snow to warrant that.
