CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The fire that broke out on a Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus earlier this month has prompted transportation officials to order school districts across the state to perform special inspections on their buses.
Six elementary school students and the driver escaped the bus seconds before it burst into flames on Feb. 8.
Investigators think worn wiring caused a short and the subsequent fire.
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction School Transportation section directed all local school system transportation departments to perform special inspections to help prevent a similar situation. A memo and inspection message was recently sent to all local school district transportation departments, officials said.
