Part of WT Harris Boulevard is shut down between Hickory Grove and Albemarle roads because of a water main break.
Officers said the road will remain closed through Monday night and possibly even rush hour Tuesday morning. They said the wet weather has complicated the repairs, which will take place on both sides of WT Harris.
Police said when they arrived at the scene, there was already water bubbling up from the pavement.
Officers continued to move the road shutdown farther back as the road started to crumble and the pavement gave way to the gush of water.
Residents in a nearby apartment complex said they experienced extremely low water pressure, and now say their water is turned off altogether.
As they face the possibility of a night without water, traffic issues are the main concern for police. Residents said the section of WT Harris Boulevard is very busy.
“A lot of traffic comes through here all day long. A lot of school buses come through here this evening, so it's going to be a backup today,” area resident Carl Maxwell said.
Police said drivers should avoid the area if possible.
