SHELBY, N.C. —
A Shelby man sent to prison for 25 years for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl is about to be set free after serving on five years of his sentence.
A jury found Ralph Gray guilty of assaulting the girl in 2009, but the conviction was thrown out.
An appeals court ruled evidence about a prior sex assault on a 4-year-old boy should not have been brought up at trial.
On Monday, Gray pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to a five-year sentence.
He’s already spent about that much time in prison from the overturned conviction.
