LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. —

A man has been arrested in connection with a string of car break-ins, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called to a home on Powell Avenue after a resident saw someone rummaging through his car, investigators said. The resident confronted the man, who then pointed a gun at him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they caught Carlos Smith, 37, as he was running away from the area. Smith was initially arrested and charged with two counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle, pointing and presenting a firearm, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of marijuana.

Investigators later determined Smith had broken into three other vehicles on Powell Avenue, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was then charged with three additional counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle.
