CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Some small business groups said Thursday evening the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act will result in higher costs and fewer jobs.
The National Federation of Independent Businesses issued a statement, saying in part, "Small business owners are going to face an onslaught of taxes and mandates, resulting in job loss and closed businesses," and that it will "continue to fight for the repeal of health-care in the halls of Congress."
In Charlotte, some small business owners said they are confused by the intricacies of the law and fear it could hurt them.
Dale Dorsey's parents started Lubromation in 1960. On its website, the company describes itself as s company that designs, installs and services lubrication systems.
Dorsey has 11 employees and pays 60 percent of their health insurance.
The economic downturn of the past few years has been tough, he said.
"We had a bad downturn ourselves," Dorsey said. "But, we kind of made it through that and lately, business has been picking up."
He's even started to hire again.
But now Dorsey's worried the Affordable Care Act will mean higher costs that force him to pull back.
"More mandates, more regulation stifle job creation," he said.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte political science professor Bill Brandon said that's not the case.
"He's exactly the kind of employer for whom this is going to be a great benefit," Brandon said.
According to healthcare.gov, a federal government website managed by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, only businesses that have more than 50 full-time employees are required to provide health insurance.
Brandon said companies with up to 25 employees who pay average annual wages below $50,000 and provide health insurance may qualify for tax credits. He said the new system is also designed to provide cheaper policy rates.
Benson said that means businesses like Dorsey's could actually end up saving money.
But, Dorsey isn't convinced yet. He wants to see for himself once the law takes effect.
"I don't think it's going to be good," he said.
