Another dollar store wants to open in east Charlotte.
Matthews-based Family Dollar is asking city leaders to rezone land on Milton Road for a new store. There are already two Family Dollars on that road. This one would make three in a 2.2-mile stretch.
Eyewitness News mapped out all the dollar stores around the intersection of Milton Road and The Plaza. There are four Family Dollars, three Dollar Generals and two Dollar Trees within 3 miles of there. That's nine total. Family Dollar's new store would be the tenth.
That's too many to longtime resident and barbershop owner, Dudley Ridley.
"You don't need three or four right in the same neighborhood. It's hard enough to get the neighborhood up to standard," he said.
People around say they don't have anything against Family Dollar or any dollar stores. They said they just want other businesses to have eyes for them, too. Susan Lindsay feels east Charlotte has a lot going for it, but that it will never improve its reputation if the only businesses willing to invest there are dollar stores.
"I know that there's more income here," she said.
City Council's John Autry is also frustrated. He feels the city can use better streetscaping, incentives and mass transit to attract a variety of businesses to east Charlotte, but you still have to convince those companies it's worth it.
"If we can't find commercial partners willing to come in and set up shop," he said. "I think that's the most difficult part. It's the biggest challenge."
