CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The owner of a cell phone store on Sharon Amity Road said he had to fight back when a masked gunman demanded money from him Saturday afternoon.

Ismial Korhan said he remained calm, even when the robber jumped over the counter.

“He pulled the gun, counted 1, 2, 3, and said ‘you want to give me the money or not?’” Korhan said.

Korhan was able to knock the gun away as the man fired shots. Bullets hit the wall and a refrigerator.

Another worker and two customers, including a child, were able to escape before the bullets were fired.

During the scuffle, Korhan said the man's mask came off.

Korhan described how he tried to talk to the man.

“I said, ‘listen, I’m recording you here.’ I said, ‘I’ll give you the money. Don’t point the gun. Don’t shoot for money,'" he said.

Korhan said he didn’t think twice about taking on the robber.

“Because I had a customer -- I had to protect the customer. It’s my responsibility. It’s my store,” he said.

No one was hurt in the robbery.

Christopher Lee Wilkes was arrested Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, assault with a deadly weapon and assault or simple assault and battery with aggressive physical force.
