CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Several area counties, including Mecklenburg, are under severe thunderstorm watches.

Thunderstorms began hitting the mountains with lightning and gusty winds on Tuesday afternoon, chief meteorologist Steve Udelson said.
The storms are expected to move toward the metro area later Tuesday, Udelson said. The biggest threats with the storms are damaging winds and large hail.
