CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A truck caught fire while driving in rush hour traffic in Interstate 77.
Paul Davis was a passenger in the 1997 Ford F-150. He was headed to the office with a co-worker.
N.C. Highway Patrol troopers said Saturday the axle and rear tire of the truck broke off.
"I thought the tire had been punctured by something. The truck lifted up dropped back down," Davis said.
Davis noticed the smoke and flames from the fire seconds later. The driver immediately tried to stop, but the brakes didn't work. Davis said they thought they'd have to run into a cement wall to stop the truck, but it suddenly slowed down.
"We ran out. As soon as we turned around the seats we were sitting in exploded into flames," Davis said.
Despite the explosion, no one was hurt in the incident.
"It's a miracle we were able to walk away," Davis said.
Charlotte's Fire Department said Saturday the cause of the fire was listed as undetermined.
