Man arrested in two Rock Hill hotel robberies

By Greg Suskin

ROCK HILL, S.C. —

Police said Friday that a two-week crime spree is over for a man who was arrested in Charlotte, after someone recognized him from a story on Channel 9 Eyewitness News.

U.S. marshals arrested 44-year-old Phillip Honeycutt at a Charlotte hotel Thursday.  Eyewitness News learned that Honeycutt will be charged with robbing two hotels in Rock Hill over the last week.  He's a suspect in three more similar robberies in Greenville County, S.C.

"I was very scared. I wouldn't leave my house. I wouldn't go outside after dark," said Miranda Tinker, who was working at the Microtel Inn and Suites on Riverview Road when it was robbed Sunday night.

"I thought it was strange that he came in in a long-sleeve shirt that was zipped all the way up, like it was 20 degrees outside," Tinker said.

The suspect never showed a gun, but acted like he had one beneath his shirt.

Police said in each robbery, Honeycutt asked about room rates, then looked around and demanded money.  Tinker was surprised at how polite he acted during the ordeal.

"He said, ‘I don't mean to do you any harm. You seem like a nice lady, but I'm gonna need you to empty out the cash drawer,’" she said.

Two nights later around the same time, police said Honeycutt robbed the Hampton Inn off Dave Lyle Boulevard in the exact same way.  Surveillance video shows him talking to the clerk at the counter and then walking out the door with the cash he was handed.

Apparently, when the story first aired Wednesday on Eyewitness News, a sheriff's deputy with knowledge of the crimes was watching.

"A Greenville County deputy saw your newscast, saw the video, called us and said, 'Hey, I know who your guy is,’" said Rock Hill Police Lt. Brad Redfearn.

U.S. marshals had been searching for Honeycutt and caught him without incident on Red Roof Drive in south Charlotte.  Late Friday, he was expected to be extradited to Greenville County, S.C., to face charges. He is from Mauldin.

Tinker learned of Honeycutt's arrest late Thursday.  It was the first moment of peace she'd had since the robbery at the Microtel.

"I was so happy to know he was off the streets and not out there anymore," she said.

Microtel owner Dilip Patel alerted other hotel owners in Rock Hill moments after his business was hit Sunday night.

He told Eyewitness News Friday that he was working with other owners to come up with a way to spread the word quickly if this ever happened again.  That way, hotel workers could react and keep an eye out.
