HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. —

A high school swim coach is accused of having sex with a student.

David Haynes coached swimmers at Hopewell High School in Huntersville.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said it won't be issuing a statement about the incident, but that it does background checks for all volunteers.

School officials said Haynes is banned from all CMS property, but won't say who brought the case to their attention or how.

Connie Smith teaches public school. She said, as a mother, she worries about teachers and coaches preying on teens.

"As a parent, you really worry about your children," Smith said.

But, as a teacher, she knows how easy it is for someone to falsely accuse a coach and how hard it can be for an innocent one to bounce back from that.

"Students can say things," she said.
