CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center Main after a car hit him at a bus stop Monday.

Police could announce Tuesday whether or not to charge the driver in the accident.

Brandon Petersen is a student East Mecklenburg High School.  He was waiting at the bus stop when police said a car came off the road, onto the sidewalk and hit him.

Police said there were two cars involved when a Toyota Camry tried to change lanes but hit the other car.

That caused the Camry to lose control and go up on the sidewalk.

Two other teens were able to get out of the way, but the victim did not see the car.

Petersen hit his head on the windshield and the road.  He possible suffered a broken leg also, officials said.

Police said even though the students were on the sidewalk, it is still dangerous because it’s so close to the road.

“You have to remind people that wherever they are at anywhere near roadway, it’s not safe. Be focused on traffic approaching you,” said CMPD officer David Sloan.

Police said it doesn’t look like speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, but police did said charges are pending.
