BOONE, N.C. —
The temperature plunge combined with plenty of snowfall overnight in the mountains made the roads dangerous.
There is a layer of ice on the blacktop on Highway 321.
It was tough for the Department of Transportation workers to keep up because the snow was falling so hard.
Channel 9 saw more than a dozen cars stranded on Highway 321, turning the four-lane highway into a parking lot.
“This Civic doesn’t have very much four-wheel drive. I had to pull over,” said driver Savannah Grapple.
Channel 9 spotted many drivers like Steve Wyatt stopping to try to help folks out.
“The road is really, really slick underneath the snow,” Wyatt said.
Blue Ridge Electric was dealing with nearly 5,000 outages in the mountain area.
