CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Tens of thousands of people are in uptown for the CIAA basketball tournament.Semi-final matchups will tip off Friday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena.Channel 9 spoke to a vendor in uptown Thursday night who said business was down and he thinks it is because of the cold.But historically, the tournament has been good for the city and businesses.Last year, the tournament was its most successful since Charlotte began hosting in 2006.In 2012, 200,000 people helped the tournament bring in $50 million to the city.That is an increase of 14 percent from the previous year, 2011.Channel 9 spoke to fans who said on average the event costs them a few hundred dollars.“I can say I’ll probably spend less than $300 for the weekend, and that’s for food and activities,” said fan Sheila McFadden.Other visitors estimate a much higher spending figure. Another fan told Channel 9 they will likely spend $3,000 this week.
