DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. —
Two people from Charlotte died in a car crash Friday afternoon when their car plunged more than 40 feet off a bridge in Davidson County.
A third passenger is in critical condition with what troopers call "life-threatening" injuries.
Three people were inside 21-year-old Shavalos Jameson's car when it plunged off of a bridge and fell nearly 50 feet onto an embankment.
"It left the grassy area, collided with the side of the bridge, and then traveled airborne on old US 64 and hit the embankment on the opposite side," said Trooper Eric Phillips with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash killed Jameson, who is known as "Carlos" by his friends and family. The woman behind the wheel, 19-year-old Thea-Simone McDuffy, also died.
Jameson's next-door neighbor told Eyewitness News he noticed Carlos was working under the car Friday afternoon before he left for Winston-Salem to visit his fiance.
"I told him to be careful because he was having a little problem with his car, and him and his friend were out there working on it. I just told him be careful going up there, you know, and they left," said Bobby McCall.
McCall said Carlos told him he had been having an issue with the tie rod -- the part of the car that makes wheels steer in the right direction.
"It shocked me. It's still with me because I can't believe he's dead," McCall said.
The third person in the car, 16-year-old Trevon Rutherford, is in critical condition at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Troopers said they're still investigating what caused the car to plunge off the bridge. They don't believe alcohol or drugs were factors.
