KANNAPOLIS, N.C. —
While Kannapolis police continue to investigate the killing of a 10-year-old boy, a community comes together to celebrate his life. Dozens of people gathered in Kannapolis to pray for the boy and his family. Kannapolis police have not released his name, but they do have a suspect in his death. Authorities were called to the boy's home Sunday night for a welfare check. Inside they found the boy dead and his mother, Christi Stewart, critically injured. Police arrested Eugene Mays, Stewart's boyfriend, on capital murder charges. People who attended Wednesday's vigil said the boy was well loved in the community. "One of the parents told me today on the phone that he had 300 mothers, that's how they thought of him and that's how much he was loved," said Sally Coleman with Mothers of Murdered Offspring. Eyewitness news was there this week as Mays stood before a judge and waived his right to an attorney. He also asked the judge to sentence him for the crime right away, but the judge refused.
