Warm temperatures, wind gusts help spread fires

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Nearly 80-degree temperatures coupled with wind gusts create perfect conditions for fast-spreading fires.

Firefighters said an uncontrolled grass fire destroyed a York County house where at least 50 firefighters battled the flames during 30 mph wind gusts.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission issued a red flag fire alert for the weekend. The commission battled more than 60 fires by 6 p.m.

One of the worst in the state was in Myrtle Beach. An entire apartment complex was evacuated.

The fire started in the woods and spread to a home before destroyed at least two apartment buildings.

Several others are damaged.

Three police officers have been treated for smoke inhalation.  One firefighter was also hurt, but it’s not clear how badly.

Firefighters in Gaston County had to close part of Interstate 85 to get a brush fire under control near the McAdenville exit.

In Charlotte, Eyewitness News captured firefighters on a Department of Transportation camera trying to put out a tree that caught fire along Interstate 485 near Wilkinson Boulevard.

Firefighters didn't have to close a lane of traffic, but they soaked the tree and the surrounding area with water.
