Two people were in a car when it went into a small pond in northeast Charlotte early Thursday morning.
The incident happened on Merlane Drive, just off West Sugar Creek Road. One woman escaped and ran to a nearby home for help.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m.
Eyewitness News spoke to a neighbor who lives next to the pond who said a woman knocked on her door, frantically asking for help. That woman had managed to get out of the car that was submerged with a man still trapped inside.
“I was in bed and a young girl came and knocked on our door -- well, banged on the door, screaming,” the neighbor said. “She told us that a car had lost its brakes and gone into the pond over here."
Firefighters were able to get him out, and both people were taken to the hospital.
