A woman’s body was found inside a burned home in Albemarle late Sunday.
Authorities said neighbors called 911 when they spotted smoke and flames shooting from the roof on Washington Lane just before 11:30 p.m. When fire investigators entered the home, they found the body of Jennifer Michelle Allen and called in the State Bureau of Investigation.
"Nobody knows what happened. So I'm just kind of curious about what did go on," said Steven Hernandez.
The same home was connected to a crime last month. Allen, who lives there, was arrested for possession of stolen goods.
Allen was due in court Monday, and Eyewitness News is asking police if the charges and the fire could be related. Police have not released any further information at this time.
Family members gave Eyewitness News the victim’s name, but it has not been confirmed by authorities. Neighbors and family said they are heartbroken and shocked. They said they are not getting answers from police about what happened.
Cheryl Huntley said she hoped to be planning her sister’s birthday, and not her funeral.
“She has four boys and they will never be with their mom again. She would have been 40 on Aug. 12,” Huntley said.
The fire marshal and SBI agents are still investigating. They said they are treating the area as a crime scene because of the nature of the death.
"Her heart was too big for her chest. She's always trying to do something for somebody else and she got caught up in the situation," Huntley said.
