The York City Council is considering whether to change its water cutoff policy.
The city manager said that York disconnects about 125 customers each month because their water bills are past due, but customers can call an after-hours number, pay $25 and a city employee will turn it back on and tell them to pay their bill the next day.
Sometimes, residents just do not do that. The new policy would require them to pay the bill first before their service is restored.
Council members gave the change preliminary approval, but a second vote, which will most likely occur next month, is still needed.
