ASHEBORO, N.C. —

Officials at the North Carolina Zoo have euthanized a cougar that had been suffering from a degenerative joint disease.

Zoo officials said the 14-year-old cougar named Dodger was put down on Wednesday after not responding to medications or treatment.

Dodger had been at the zoo in Asheboro since 1998. The cub had been found in a cage by firefighters responding to a call to a deserted Detroit building and was eventually confiscated from the building's owner.

The zoo's other cougar came to the zoo in 1997 and is in good health.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
