Man charged in second cold-case rape

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. —

A man who was arrested in 2010 on a rape charge is now charged in connection with a rape that happened nearly 30 years ago.

Roger Honeycutt was arrested Tuesday at his home in Kannapolis. Police said he broke into a home on Sharon Amity Road on Jan. 27, 1981, and raped a woman who was sleeping on her sofa.

The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center at the time, and a rape kit was performed, police said.

On Dec. 8, 2011, the case was reviewed and the rape kit was resubmitted to the CMPD Crime Lab for analysis. On Jan. 5, detectives were notified that the DNA in the rape kit matched that of Honeycutt, police said.

Police said they obtained arrest warrants for Honeycutt, charging him with first-degree burglary, second-degree rape and second-degree sex offense.

Honeycutt was free on bond at the time of his arrest Tuesday for an additional rape he was charged with in October 2010, police said. That rape also occurred in 1981, police said, but Honeycutt was not arrested until 2010.

The Cold Case Unit is continuing to investigate whether Honeycutt may be involved in additional cases, police said.
