Mecklenburg County Using Technology To Save Homes From Flooding

Storm Water Services officials in Mecklenburg County said they'll soon have a better idea of who's in danger of being hit by flood waters.

It's been one year since Tropical Storm Fay devastated parts of Charlotte. Now, county officials said they're preparing to unveil new flood maps.

Storm Water Services officials said over the past year, they've used radar-like technology to map out parts of Sugar Creek and Briar Creek. They said the new maps will give a more detailed look at the flood plains.

"It helps us to get a better handle on it and prioritize our work," program manager Tim Trautman said. "Where are areas more flood prone than other areas?"

Those new maps will not be revealed until November.

Trautman said since last year's storm, the county has bought nearly 50 homes in flood-prone areas.
