CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
I was shooting video of a traffic accident late one night when suddenly a very bright light hit me from behind. I whipped around - scared I'm not afraid to say - only to see a nice, little, old man with a giant flashlight asking me if I needed any help. He said the sound of the crashing cars had awakened him and he was on his way to see if everything was OK.
Police and Medic had everything handled, so Woody and I spent a few minutes just shooting the breeze. He mentioned he was retired and I asked what he did to stay busy. The answer dropped my jaw. It's not very often you can say something that surprises a gritty news photographer.
Woody and I kept in touch and he often gave Channel 9 news tips about things happening in his neighborhood. I always had in the back of my mind though that the real story was this neat old guy putting on a wig and jamming out on a keyboard. He's a one-of-a-kind, no doubt.
Woody also considers himself an amateur artist. He spends hours on the computer making electronic art. We've included a slide show of some of his original artwork. Click here to check it out.
