Morganton Police Release Information In Officer-involved Incident

 

MORGANTON, N.C. —

The Department of Public Safety released new information in an officer-involved shooting in Morganton August 29.

Investigators said Michael Sipes, 17, who was killed by police, fired a shot as an officer entered his home on Air Park Drive.

According to reports, Officer Johnny Cooper said Sipes turned towards him carrying a rifle as he swung the door open. Cooper drew his own weapon and shot and killed the 17-year-old Freedom High School student.

Cooper and another officer were responding to a noise complaint at the residences.

Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation investigates the shooting. The investigation could take up to eight weeks.

Family members held a funeral for Michael Sipes Saturday.

Sipes was a member of the ROTC and had planned on joining the Army after graduation.
