Mother Charged In Shooting Of Daughter At Uptown Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

An uptown Charlotte woman is accused of shooting her 19-year-old daughter in the chest early Wednesday.

The shooting happened in the First Ward, near the intersection of Eighth and Alexander streets, at about 5 a.m.

Police said the mother, Carmen Cooper, and daughter, Kristen Cooper, got into an argument, and the mother pulled out a handgun and shot her daughter.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Captain Jeffrey Pless said Kristen Cooper was awake and talking to police despite the bullet lodged in her chest when she was transported to the hospital. She has since undergone surgery and is expected to recover.

Eyewitness News cameras captured Carmen Cooper sitting on the sidewalk in front of her North Alexander Street home while her daughter was treated in an ambulance. She was taken into custody a short time later and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Another adult and a young child were in the home at the time of the shooting but they were not hurt.
