CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick is proposing a bill that would limit federal funding for colleges and universities across the country that knowingly admit students who are in the country illegally.

"It's my belief that federal tax dollars should not be going to support institutions who admit illegal immigrants," Myrick said Wednesday.

Myrick's announcement comes the same week that the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges is expected to decide whether to allow illegal immigrants to enroll at its schools.

In May, believing federal laws were being violated, the state attorney general banned undocumented immigrants from attending community colleges.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security said states have the right to decide on the controversial issue.
