NASCAR Hall Of Fame Site Task Force To Visit Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

NASCAR Hall of Fame site task force officials will be in Charlotte next Wednesday to review Charlotte's proposal to land the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Radio and television stations in Charlotte are holding mini-rallies along the route. They will be at The Green, Wachovia Plaza, The Square and several other locations.

WSOC-TV is sponsoring a rally at Hearst Plaza.

The public is encouraged to come out and show their support with signs or by wearing something yellow.

Charlotte's plan includes a new building for the hall of fame. It's planned for a plot of land directly behind the convention center in Uptown. City leaders plan to connect the two buildings.

Leaders said the city is perfect for the hall of fame because so many race teams are headquartered in our area. They believe about 400,000 to 1 million people a year could visit the hall of fame every year, making it a huge tourism boost for the city.

Texan John Jennings said that, while visiting Charlotte, he could imagine a NASCAR Hall of Fame in the Queen City.

"Being here, yes. From this point forward, I would associate NASCAR with Charlotte. If they had a hall of fame, I would go by and do it," he said.

Wednesday morning, city leaders will have a better idea of how one of the competing cities is planning. Speedway officials in Daytona Beach unveiled the design of their bid for a NASCAR Hall of Fame Tuesday night.

It's a $70 million building next to the Daytona Speedway.

Other cities in the running include Atlanta, Kansas City and Richmond.
