CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
What started with a swearing-in ceremony, ended with calls for resignation.
A board with five new members took office Tuesday, but it was old business that was their primary concern.
One month after the former board voted to move students from Myers Park High School to East Meck, board member Kay McGarry wanted the issue back on the agenda, calling the decision premature.
She said her request was about accountability for the board's new members.
“They will be here to see the dismantling and repercussions of that decision in the next couple years. And there will be many,” she said.
Eyewitness News knew before the meeting that the votes to overturn last month's decision weren't there. But that didn't stop supporters on both sides from recreating scenes from many times in the past few months.
The issue elicited more strong words, even tears. Parents begged the board to reverse the move.
After more than an hour of public comment, the new board took one of its first votes. The result was 7-2 in favor keeping the decision as-is.
Hundreds of students from the Myers Park IB will still move to East Meck.
One of the board's newest members was also elected its new chairman. Eric Davis, who is a parent of a Myers Park student, voted not to revisit the Myers Park issue, saying the best course to move forward with what's already been decided.
