New Details Released In Officer-Involved Shooting In East Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Police have released a few more details in a deadly shooting involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.

Authorities now say Officer Jeffrey Wheaton fired the shots that killed a 16-year-old in east Charlotte over the weekend.

The shooting happened near the Casa De Lago apartment complex on Albemarle Road where officers were investigating a possible robbery. The officers say they chased Laquan Brown because he was running from the scene.

They said the officer opened fire when he spotted a gun on Brown and the teen raised one of his hands.

Police said Tuesday they found a gun about 20 feet away from Brown's body, but they said they don't know who it belonged to.

Both officers are on administrative leave.
