CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
For months, Royce Mitchell has been the only man publicly named as a person of interest in the murder of Tiffany Wright and her unborn child.
But Mitchell's attorney said police now have another man they consider a person of interest in Wright's murder. The attorney said that man could have fathered Wright's baby.
His name is Adrian Powell. Mitchell's attorney said she got a call from the District Attorney's Office on Nov. 30 about Powell.
Sources tell Eyewitness News police in Charlotte consider Powell a person of interest and that he was ordered to take a DNA test.
It was back in August when a pregnant Tiffany Wright was shot and killed early one morning as she waited at her school bus stop.
Police quickly zeroed in on her adoptive brother Royce Mitchell, who had a prior drug conviction and was on probation. DNA cleared Mitchell as the father, but a judge decided there was enough evidence that Mitchell had violated probation, and ordered him back behind bars.
Now, Mitchell and his defense team hope this newly discovered evidence is enough to get him a new hearing.
Mitchell's attorney filed a motion for a new hearing on Dec. 1.
In another court filing, the U.S. Attorney clearly states that Mitchell's attorney knew about the other person of interest in the case, and goes on to say that fact would have no effect on Mitchell's probation status.
