Police in northwest Charlotte are getting out of their cruisers to do more patrolling on two wheels.
Officers in the North Division resurrected their bike patrol in response to a spike in home burglaries in several neighborhoods off Mount Holly-Huntersville Road.
They said they’re focusing on walking trails because burglars often kicked in back doors to get inside and then use the trails to escape. From the trails they get a clear view of who's coming and going on the backside of homes, something they could never do in a patrol car.
Homeowners like Lakeisha White said the patrols make her feel safer.
“Just seeing them going on around on the bikes makes me feel safer to come home and be able to get out, whether I'm coming home during the day or at night,” she said.
The North Division couldn't get funding for the bike unit from their budget but they're so committed they've been working closely with businesses in the community to help fund the unit.
In fact, an area business donated a bike earlier this week.
