CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A spokesperson for the city of Charlotte Solid Waste Department said the yard waste truck was making a right onto West Boulevard from Billy Graham Parkway, when the driver lost control and flipped on top of a Toyota Highlander sitting at the stop light on West Boulevard.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m., and blocked traffic for several hours.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the driver of the Toyota, Robert Stark, 70, died at the scene. Three other passengers, Francis Stark, Erik Stark and Florence Dubois were rushed to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
One of the passengers was pinned in the SUV for 80 minutes before getting rescued.
Investigators said the three workers in the city garbage truck suffered minor injuries.
According to a city spokesperson, the driver of the city truck, Malaki Ysrayl, is a temporary employee working for the city through a staffing agency. He has been employed for one month and this was his first accident in a city vehicle, officials said.
