One Person Dies In Tractor Trailer Accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

One person died after slamming into the back of a tractor trailer that had pulled over into an emergency lane early Monday morning, police said.

Police said the victim was 37-year-old John Frunzelle Lamont Johnson.

The driver of the truck said he was in the emergency lane because his truck was having mechanical problems.

The accident happened on Interstate 77 at Trade Street around 1:45 a.m. Monday.

Johnson hit the tractor trailer while traveling southbound on the Trade Street exit ramp but continued on the interstate instead of getting off, police said.

The tractor trailer driver was not injured.

The tractor trailer's axle broke when the car crashed into it. It stayed parked in the emergency lane for part of Monday morning but did not affect traffic conditions on Interstate 77.
