GASTONIA, N.C. —

The Carolina Panthers' Steve Smith and Bobcats Basketball player Reggie Williams joined volunteers with Samaritan's Feet and OrthoCarolina foundation to give free shoes to every student at Rhyne Elementary School where almost all of the children come from struggling families.

"For me it's just coming in here and having fun. Smiling and enjoying it," said Smith.

Smith said he identifies with their situation.

"For a kid like me growing up, sometimes mom had to make that choice between the light bill and the shoe bill," said Smith.

Students at Rhyne beamed with joy.

Classroom Central gave students free backpacks packed with school supplies.

Principal Rebecca Huffstetler kept the giveaway a secret to surprise her students, but it surprised her, too.

"It has touched my heart in a way that I will never be able to describe. I had no idea how amazing it was going to be," said Huffstetler.

NFL Play 60 set up a playground for the students.
