Pilot Aborts Takeoff For Charlotte-Bound Flight

YEAGER, W.V. —

A US Airways flight aborted takeoff Tuesday at Yeager Airport and came to rest in lightweight concrete material installed to prevent planes from going over the mountaintop runway, an airport spokesman said.

The regional jet bound for Charlotte, N.C., with 30 passengers and three crew members aborted takeoff at 4:22 p.m., said airport spokesman Brian Belcher. No one was injured.

It wasn't immediately known why the takeoff was aborted, Belcher said. A call to the Federal Aviation Administration's Eastern Regional Office wasn't immediately returned Tuesday night.

The plane came to rest about 100 feet from the edge of the hillside on the airport's main runway. No other flights were being allowed to land or take off from the airport, Belcher said.

He said the concrete material was installed at the end of the runway about a year ago and "it worked like it was supposed to."

The plane was removed and the airport reopened around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
