Jose Rosales is living through a parent's nightmare. His daughter, 15-year-old Martha Rosales, was killed in a crash Wednesday night.
Martha Rosales' older brother said she was an honor student and wanted to become a veterinarian.
"She was going somewhere," said Diego Rosales.
Martha Rosales' family says she was watching 18-year-old Sydney McDaniel's 11-month-old son Wednesday night when McDaniel came by and asked Martha and her friend to go to the store with her. The Rosales said the three teenage girls grew up in the same neighborhood.
Police said a little after 9 p.m. Wednesday, McDaniel lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on Pence Road.
"We heard the big crash," said Juan Ventura, who works near the scene.
Ventura said he ran to the car, heard a baby was inside and broke the window.
"I pulled the baby out and started walking to the other side, running, trying to see if the baby was OK," Ventura said.
He said he worked to make sure the baby was breathing.
"I was shaking," Ventura said.
The principal at Rocky River High School told Eyewitness News that she sent a note to students letting them know what happened and asking for prayers for the families. She said there will be counselors at the school Monday and a moment of silence for Martha Rosales.
Martha Rosales' family hopes classmates remember her big heart and that she was always willing to help anyone.
"People remember the good things about her and what she did for you," Diego Rosales said.
Williams said the girls were her best friends. She calls Wednesday night the worst night of her life.
"I didn't know what happened. I looked around and Sydney was already outside of the car and everybody else was quiet. I didn't know what was going on," Williams said.
A funeral for Rosales will be Sunday at the Carolina Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Police said McDaniel and the other passenger were treated and released from the hospital. Eyewitness News does not have an update on the 11-month-old boy.
Police said McDaniel was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, driving after consuming while under 21, fictitious tag on vehicle, child neglect and possession of marijuana.
