Police Charge 2 Men In Deadly University City Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Police charged two men Friday after a deadly shooting in University City Thursday night.

Jerry Fewell was charged with murder and two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Tahashi Matthews faces the same charges. Both men are currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

An off-duty officer was working as security at an apartment complex on Arlyn Circle near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte when he heard glass break and called for backup.

Other officers nearby stopped a car driving slowly with its headlights off and found evidence of a shooting.

Fewell and Matthews tried to rob Jonathan Nelson, 18, and his cousin while they sat in a car outside apartments on Arlyn Circle around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

One of the men shot Nelson, according to police.

Nelson's cousin drove him to the hospital, but he died, police said.

Fewell and Matthews were arrested on University City Boulevard around midnight Thursday.
