Police Investigate Shooting Involving One Of Their Own

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is looking into a fatal shooting at an East Charlotte apartment complex involving a police officer. CMPD said one of its officers shot and killed 16-year-old Laquan Brown.

It happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday at the Casa Del Lago apartment complex off of Albemarle Road. Police went there on a robbery call, but when they got there they said they saw Brown running. Officers Brian Carey and Jeff Wheaton said they went after Brown. The officers said Brown had a gun and when he raised his hand, one of the officers shot him twice.

Both officers were put on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure. The shooting is being investigated and the results will go to the District Attorney’s office. In addition, a review board will evaluate all of the evidence. The board is made up of a civilian, officers from Internal Affairs, and the officers’ supervisors. The review board will evaluate the evidence to determine if any departmental policies were violated
