Police: Man Confessed To Shooting Ex-Girlfriend

ROCK HILL, S.C. —

Estelle Robinson told Eyewitness News she never worried about her grandson's safety, even after an Amber Alert was issued following the murder of her daughter.

Carl White Jr., 28, was finally stopped near the Georgia border and charged with drinking and driving. Zaylen, 1, was found with him, unhurt.

"I had faith in God because I knew he'd never hurt that baby. He loved that baby," Robinson said.

Robinson said she also thought White loved her daughter, Shrece. At least, she said, he did for much of their five-year relationship.

"He treated her fine. I never had any problem with him," she said.

Rock Hill police said White confessed to shooting and killing Robinson in his driveway Saturday night, after the two had argued.

Estelle Robinson said her daughter had met someone else, and was trying to end the relationship with White.

"He was drinking a lot, and it got real bad," she said.

Robinson said her daughter had an agreement with White where he would care for their son, Zaylen, every other weekend.

On Saturday night, she got angry and went to his house to get the toddler. Police said White shot her outside his home with a 38-caliber pistol and left the gun there.

He then took the toddler, borrowed a friend's SUV and left Rock Hill, according to police. An Amber Alert was issued, and after a trucker recognized the vehicle, the Ford Expedition was stopped outside Aiken.

White was first charged with DUI and child endangerment. On Monday, a murder charge was added, as police said White confessed to the shooting.

Estelle Robinson said when she got the call from police, she expected the worst.

"When they told me to come to the scene, I wished her to still be living. But when I saw the police and the ambulance I knew already, she was gone,” she said.

A criminal background check in South Carolina found numerous convictions for White going back to 2003. He was convicted for drug possession, assault and battery high and aggravated, as well as weapons charges.

Bond has been set on the charges in Aiken. Rock Hill police said if White posts bond, he'll immediately be placed in their custody and brought there to face the murder charge.

Zaylen turns 2 years old on June 4. He is in the Department of Social Services’ custody in Aiken, but was expected to be brought back to Rock Hill by Monday night.

Robinson said her grandson is now her responsibility. Her daughter had asked her to take him if something ever happened to her.

"I'm going to be happy with him. Start all over as a mom again. Take her place, you know," she said.
